Bon-Bon Cookies

From: Maryann, Youth Centre, 1978




o        ¾ cup powdered sugar

o        ½ cup margarine or butter (softened)

o        1 tablespoon vanilla

o        Few drops of food coloring (if desired)

o        1 ½ cups all-purpose flour (DO NOT USE SELF-RISING FLOUR)

o        1/8 teaspoon salt

o        Dates, nuts, semi-sweet chocolate chips, candied cherries, or maraschino cherries

o        Glaze or chocolate glaze (see below)


To Prepare…




1.       Heat oven to 350 degrees.

2.       Mix powdered sugar, margarine, vanilla, and food coloring

3.       Work in flour and salt until dough folds together (if dough is dry, mix in 1 or 2 tablespoons milk)

4.       For each cookie, shape dough by tablespoonful around date, nut, chocolate chips, or cherry to form ball

5.       Place about 1 inch apart on ungreased cookie sheet

6.       Bake until set, but not brown, 12 to 15 minutes; then cool

7.       Dip tops of cookies into glaze

8.       Decorate with coconut, nuts, colored sugar, chocolate chips or chocolate shots if desired




o        Beat 1 cup powdered sugar, 1 tablespoon + 1 ½ teaspoons milk and 1 teaspoon vanilla until smooth and of desired consistency.

o        Tint parts of glaze with different food colors if desired
